Yarn from the Farm: Ross Farm Fibers

Free Range Sheep

The thing that makes yarn shows magical for me is, of course, meeting our customers in person.  So many times, I’ve known someone by only name or Ravatar, and getting the chance to see them face to face at last is always such a delight!  But there’s another aspect of shows that I really love, and that’s getting to meet and hang out with other vendors.  They are some seriously cool people — makers and craftspeople I really admire — and, even though shows are hard hard work, there is a sense of camaraderie and sharing amongst the vendors that is really wonderful to experience.

And I want to introduce you to two I’ve really enjoyed getting to know.   I think most of us who’ve caught the knitting or crochet bug have  also developed a fondness for sheep and the farms and farmers who bring us their wool.  So when I first spotted Ross Farm Fiber‘s booth at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival a few years ago, I made a beeline, and immediately introduced myself.

Ross Farm Barn

I’m so glad I did!  Amy and Scott (whose nametag sometimes reads, “Scooterpie the Shepherd Guy”) are just lovely — really warm and open, the kind of people who make you want to sit down with a cup of tea and your knitting and just natter the rest of the day away.  Except you can’t, because you’re right in the middle of crazy-busy show, and there are customers everywhere and…  yep, back to work!

But Amy invited me down to their farm, and last week I took her up on it.  And do you know, it’s everything you’d want a small family farm to be!  She and Scott took me on a tour of barns that had been in her family for generations, introduced me to their donkeys and Halflingers, small horses that followed us round, nuzzling my pockets for treats.  And when they called the sheep down from the fields (and they come flying too!), Amy and Scott knew each ewe by name as they came pouring through the barn doors.

Rush into the barn

At Ross Farm, Amy and Scott raise rare and heritage breeds: mostly Leicester Longwools and Romneys, a small flock of Jacobs (I love Jacobs!) and another of Corriedales, and a handful of Cheviots, Shetlands, Tunis, and Lincolns.  And the thing that really surprised me? They’re all watched over by their donkeys, who work in pairs to keep the coyotes at bay!

Donkey

Oh, and then there’s Lilah Grace.  But I’m guessing she’s not much of a deterrent to coyotes — she spent most of her time trotting out in front of me and the flopping down right in my path and begging to have her belly rubbed.

The Lovely Lilah Grace

And thing thing I love most is their focus on giving their animals a genuinely happy existence.  That have large fields with plenty of space to roam in the day, and comfortable barns to bed down in at night.  Happy sheep indeed.

Ross Farm Fibers sells fleece and yarn — rustic and farmy and beautiful.  It’s so different from the yarn I usually dye and sell at SpaceCadet — commercially spun yarn can never acheive the rustic-ness of farm yarn — but could I resist bringing some home to play with?  Not a chance!  And I knew I wanted to share a little of Ross Farm’s magic with my customers too so, SpaceMonsters, keep your eyes on your postboxes in February — you are in for a treat!

I know why you knit or crochet.  It’s for the same reason I do — to slow the world down for a little while and ground yourself in the rhythmic click of the needles.  And that grounding has to start with beautiful wool — a fiber unequaled by anything man can manufacture.  When you visit a place like Ross Farm, you can see why.

And The Winner Is….

Wow!  You guys… Wow!  Do you guys know how much fun it was to watch your entries roll in to win a space in the new Swatch Like You Mean It course?!?

Seriously, within hours, there were so many comments that I could hardly keep up.  And the information in those comments — your answers to the question, “What’s your number one excuse for not swatching?” — actually paints a beautiful picture as to why this course is really needed.  I was texting Mel (the podcaster at Singlehanded Knits and creator of the course) to tell her she had to read through every single one.  So much great insight!

But, none of that is why you’re reading this, is it?  You want to know who won!  So, without further ado, the winner is…

Carol, congratulations!  We’ll be in touch soon with info about your prize.

Lessons (and Limited Editions)

In the last fortnight, I’ve learned a valuable lesson.  Two weeks ago, I asked you all for suggestions as we made our plans for 2014.  And earlier this week, I invited your comments as your entry to win a place on the new Swatch Like You Mean It course.

Both times, a direct request for quick feedback and, both times, you guys blew us away.  The first time I asked, your emails came in like a deluge — so thick and so fast that Jill (who sees all the emails first) suddenly said, “What is going ON?!?” (I’d written that post in a burst of last-minute inspiration and totally forgot to tell her to expect your emails.  Oooops!).

The SpaceCadet's Mini-Skein Club

And the second time I asked, you guys replied with literally hundreds of comments within a couple of hours.  It was amazing to watch!  And I know it’s given Mel a ton of wonderful information that she can use to help you overcome your hurdles to swatching.

So the valuable lesson?  For as much as it might feel like the most important thing in running a hand-dyeing business is the dyeing… the truth is that the real most important thing is a great Community.  And that’s so more than just having people who buy yarn.  That’s having wonderful people who come together o make a KAL supportive and fun; it’s what makes a yarn show great because I finally get to meet so many customers in person; it’s the supportive and helpful posts on Ravelry whenever anyone has a question or needs assistance.  A great community is truly an amazing thing.

And there was a second lesson too.  When I have a question, I should…  just ask you.

So Here’s a Question…

I have a little dilemma.  You see that gradient kit below?  The one that morphs from that fabulous yellow into gray into lavender?  Yeah, I’m totally in love with it, but I can’t for the life of me think of a name for it.  There’s two of those kits sitting in the shop right now with no name (seriously!).  People will think I’ve gone mad.

Unamed SpaceCadet Gradient Kit

So here’s my question: what would you call that gradient colourway?  Leave your answers in the comments (or just hit ‘reply’ if you’re reading this by email).  I’m totally stuck and I’d really appreciate your ideas!

Limited Edition Colourways

You guys already know that the Mini-Skeins are my opportunity to really explore colour and experiment with new ideas.  See those Mini-Skein bundles up at the top?  They were the Multicolour Mix for October, November, and December — and there were three colourways in there that I just knew I wanted to dye again.

  • Celeste (3ply fingering, 490 yds)
  • Lucina (sparkly fingering, 430 yds), and
  • Lyra (cable plied sport, 270 yds)

Giveaway: Swatch Like You Mean It!

You should swatch.  You know that, right?  I mean, it’s right there in every pattern you start.  And even if it weren’t there, you’d know anyway.  Everyone knows you should always swatch before starting a project.

Y’know what?  I’m realllllly bad at swatching.  I mean, I do it…  most of the time.  And pretty grudgingly, if I’m honest.  It feels like a waste of time — nothing but a hurdle between me and that pattern I’m just itching to cast on.

So I have always been impressed (and a little shamed) by the attitude that Mel of Singlehanded Knit’s brings to swatching.  She not only does swatches every time, but she really enjoys it — embraces it even!  She uses it as an opportunity to get to know her yarn, and to make better decisions about how to adjust her pattern because she really understands how her yarn behaves.

Huh!  Now, when she puts it that way, it actually sounds like something worth doing.  So I was seriously chuffed when Mel announced a new class she’s created that all about learning to love swatching!  Swatch Like You Mean It explores the good side of swatching — the exciting, informative, and yes, even fun side of swatching.

Quick! We Need Your Input for 2014!

2014 has arrived beneath a beautiful blanket of snow, and somehow the new year feels as full of hope and possibilities as all that perfect, fresh whiteness.

Snow1

We have great plans for the upcoming year: new colourways, new premises, fun KALs, exciting website changes, and new adventures with local yarn shops.   It’ll take lots to do and lots to work to make it all happen — and we can’t wait to get started!

Amy, Jade, and I are getting together today to work through some of those plans.  I’m getting the coffees, they’re bringing fresh eyes and fresh ideas — and lots of that enthusiasm that I’ve come to rely on.  It’s going to be good.

Coffee

But there’s one more thing that we need, and that can come only from you.  The biggest part of making our plans is knowing what you want — seriously, nothing is more important.

So please would you take a moment and give us your input?

Leave a very quick comment below and we’ll use it in today’s meeting.  Tell us:

  1. What you think we’ve done right this year.  What have you loved?  What would you like to see more of?
  2. What we could change or improve?  We’d love to hear your constructive suggestions.
  3. And lastly, please give us the name of an LYS you’d like to see SpaceCadet yarn in this year.  What’s the coolest yarn shop in your city?  Who should we be talking to?

Snow2

Thank you so much for being such a wonderful community in 2013 — it’s been a great year!  And now, with your help, we’re looking forward to an more fantastic 2014.  A Happy New Year indeed!

Sharing our SpaceCadet Christmas Tradition

I have a million things going on this morning and, if you celebrate Christmas, I’m sure it’s the same for you.  But before we get stuck into the hustle and bustle, I wanted to take a moment and wish all of you — knitters, crocheters, designers, friends, suppliers, and most of all, our wonderful customers and club members — the very happiest of holiday seasons.  In this crazy time of year, I wish you a little stillness and peace, the love of family and friends, and — of course! — a bit of quiet time to knit.

For us, Christmas starts with our family tradition of decorating the tree on Christmas Eve.  Even if the tree has come into the house weeks before, nothing but the lights go on it until the night before Christmas.  And then we spend all day together, rolling out salt dough and gingerbread for the ornaments, stringing each one, and finally dressing the tree in ribbons and handmade ornaments before its big day.  Of all the holiday preparations we go through, there is none I like so much as this one, none that feels so homey and Christmas-y to me.

And I just wanted to share it with you…

The SpaceCadet's Christmas Tree

Warmest Holiday Wishes to You All!
