New Colourways

And you know I said we’d been hard at work in the studio developing new colourways?  It’s a really long process — first there’s the original colour idea, then the development of the recipe, then dyeing up test batches and checking quality, the photography and image editing, and then finally getting the new colouways up on the website.

New SpaceCadet Colourways - Ares, Mars, How Dare You, and Oxblood

But our new colours are slowly making their way into the shop, one by one — and I’ll be working on putting a few more of them in later this week and over the weekend.  But for now, have a look for fabulous four new shades in Lyra.  And, hey, leave a comment and let me know which is your favourite — I’d love to know!

The Yarn Alliance Opens in March

Hana Hou: A Giveaway!

Is someone giving you roses today?  Maybe a huge box of chocolate?  Valentine’s Day can be a wonderful bright spot in the depths of winter but if, like me, you aren’t likely to get something from a sweetheart, then let me step in and give you a sweet little treat of my own…

Hana Hou 2 480

My friend Mel of Singlehanded Knits has just released Hana Hou, a gorgeous new cardigan design that I just love, absolutely love.  Knit in sport weight yarn and perfect for SpaceCadet Lyra, it features an asymmetrical style with a really beautiful border detail on the placket and cuffs.  It’s just the kind of knit you find yourself itching to get on the needles…

Hana Hou 1 480

But there’s something more about Hana Hou that knocked my socks off.  Rather than simply put together a regular pattern, Mel has turned Hana Hou into a stunning look book, each page filled with the most incredibly luscious photography alongside the pattern instructions.  Every image makes you feel like you are falling right into the page and changes Hana Hou from a simple pattern into something that feels more like an escape to the islands.  I can’t stop scrolling through it on my iPad…

Hana Hou 4 480

Win a Copy of the Hana Hou Pattern & Look Book!

So how about a copy of your own?  You got it! Mel has very generously given me seven copies of Hana Hou to give away to seven lucky winners!

All you have to do is:

  2. and then leave a comment here on the blog telling me which Lyra colourway you’d choose for your Hana Hou (don’t forget to mention your Ravelry name)

That’s it!  Once that’s done, you’re in with a chance to win your own copy of the gorgeous Hana Hou pattern look book!  But hurry — the giveaway closes on Monday Feb 17 at 11.59pm EST, and I’ll announce the winner on the blog on Tuesday.

Hana Hou 3 480

Which is the Best Mini-Skein Colourway?

Spoiler Alert: If you’re in the Mini-Skein Club and haven’t seen your January bundles yet, look away now!

One of the things I love most about the SpaceCadet’s Mini-Skein Club is that it’s designed to fit whatever size project you are making — you can join at any time, and then stop your subscription whenever you have enough yarn for your particular project.  So we have a few new members each month (love it when they come to the Raverlry group and share their excitement!), and a few who’ve collected all the Mini-Skeins they need for now.  And whenever someone leaves the SpaceCadet’s Mini-Skein Club, I always send an email to ask for their feedback on what we’ve done right, and their ideas about how we could make it better.

Mixing colours

The answers are always so interesting and helpful.  And the idea that’s been coming through the most lately is that folks would really love to be able to order full-sized skeins of their favourite Mini-Skein colourways.  Such a fab idea!  So I tested it out last month with three Mini-Skein colourways I offered as Limited Editions and…

WOW!  You guys really meant it!  We’re elbow-deep in the process of dyeing up all those orders right now (the studio is a sea of Malachite at the moment), but your amazing response has really got me thinking…  You know that dyeing for the Mini-Skein Club is when I get really play with colour.  I experiment, try new colour cominations, work on different dyeing techniques, and just let my creative juices flow.  And the results can be amazing.

Now, sometimes the colourways are repeatable and sometimes they are not, but I thought, hey, why not ask you guys which are the best from each month’s bundles?  After all, it’s your opinion that matters the most!

The SpaceCadet's Mini-Skein Club, Multicolour Jan 2014
Clockwise from top left: Colourway 6, 7, 8, 9, & 10

So here are January’s Mini-Skein bundles (Ombre & Gradient, and Multicolour).  And I’d love it if you’d answer two questions for me:

  1. Which one colourway called out to you the first — the one you loved as soon as you saw it?
  2. And which one do you think would be the best to become a permanent addition to the SpaceCadet line-up?

(I know for a lot of you, those questions sound exactly the same, but they’re actually quite different.  One cals for a gut-feeling kind of answer and the other for a more careful and strategic response.  But if you have the same answer for both questions, I totally get it — some colourways are just like that!)

Click here to share your answers on Facebook , or click here to join the conversation on Ravelry.  I know which of these colourways is my favourite…  I can’t wait to hear which is yours!

Yarn from the Farm: Ross Farm Fibers

Free Range Sheep

The thing that makes yarn shows magical for me is, of course, meeting our customers in person.  So many times, I’ve known someone by only name or Ravatar, and getting the chance to see them face to face at last is always such a delight!  But there’s another aspect of shows that I really love, and that’s getting to meet and hang out with other vendors.  They are some seriously cool people — makers and craftspeople I really admire — and, even though shows are hard hard work, there is a sense of camaraderie and sharing amongst the vendors that is really wonderful to experience.

And I want to introduce you to two I’ve really enjoyed getting to know.   I think most of us who’ve caught the knitting or crochet bug have  also developed a fondness for sheep and the farms and farmers who bring us their wool.  So when I first spotted Ross Farm Fiber‘s booth at the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival a few years ago, I made a beeline, and immediately introduced myself.

Ross Farm Barn

I’m so glad I did!  Amy and Scott (whose nametag sometimes reads, “Scooterpie the Shepherd Guy”) are just lovely — really warm and open, the kind of people who make you want to sit down with a cup of tea and your knitting and just natter the rest of the day away.  Except you can’t, because you’re right in the middle of crazy-busy show, and there are customers everywhere and…  yep, back to work!

But Amy invited me down to their farm, and last week I took her up on it.  And do you know, it’s everything you’d want a small family farm to be!  She and Scott took me on a tour of barns that had been in her family for generations, introduced me to their donkeys and Halflingers, small horses that followed us round, nuzzling my pockets for treats.  And when they called the sheep down from the fields (and they come flying too!), Amy and Scott knew each ewe by name as they came pouring through the barn doors.

Rush into the barn

At Ross Farm, Amy and Scott raise rare and heritage breeds: mostly Leicester Longwools and Romneys, a small flock of Jacobs (I love Jacobs!) and another of Corriedales, and a handful of Cheviots, Shetlands, Tunis, and Lincolns.  And the thing that really surprised me? They’re all watched over by their donkeys, who work in pairs to keep the coyotes at bay!

Donkey

Oh, and then there’s Lilah Grace.  But I’m guessing she’s not much of a deterrent to coyotes — she spent most of her time trotting out in front of me and the flopping down right in my path and begging to have her belly rubbed.

The Lovely Lilah Grace

And thing thing I love most is their focus on giving their animals a genuinely happy existence.  That have large fields with plenty of space to roam in the day, and comfortable barns to bed down in at night.  Happy sheep indeed.

Tractor

Ross Farm Fibers sells fleece and yarn — rustic and farmy and beautiful.  It’s so different from the yarn I usually dye and sell at SpaceCadet — commercially spun yarn can never acheive the rustic-ness of farm yarn — but could I resist bringing some home to play with?  Not a chance!  And I knew I wanted to share a little of Ross Farm’s magic with my customers too so, SpaceMonsters, keep your eyes on your postboxes in February — you are in for a treat!

I know why you knit or crochet.  It’s for the same reason I do — to slow the world down for a little while and ground yourself in the rhythmic click of the needles.  And that grounding has to start with beautiful wool — a fiber unequaled by anything man can manufacture.  When you visit a place like Ross Farm, you can see why.

And The Winner Is….

Wow!  You guys… Wow!  Do you guys know how much fun it was to watch your entries roll in to win a space in the new Swatch Like You Mean It course?!?

Seriously, within hours, there were so many comments that I could hardly keep up.  And the information in those comments — your answers to the question, “What’s your number one excuse for not swatching?” — actually paints a beautiful picture as to why this course is really needed.  I was texting Mel (the podcaster at Singlehanded Knits and creator of the course) to tell her she had to read through every single one.  So much great insight!

SLYMI

We have a Winner!

But, none of that is why you’re reading this, is it?  You want to know who won!  So, without further ado, the winner is…

Carol, who said, “The reason I don’t think I ‘need’ to swatch is because I can see how it will look in my mind’s eye. Sadly, I have to say that my mind’s eye is mostly not very accurate.”

Carol, congratulations!  We’ll be in touch soon with info about your prize.

 You Can Still Join!

SLYMI 2

Ok, so maybe you aren’t Carol and you didn’t win.. . but this is going to be an awesome class and registration is still open so you can still grab your space!

This class is exactly what you need.   And all that for less than $25?  Click here to join!

Lessons (and Limited Editions)

In the last fortnight, I’ve learned a valuable lesson.  Two weeks ago, I asked you all for suggestions as we made our plans for 2014.  And earlier this week, I invited your comments as your entry to win a place on the new Swatch Like You Mean It course.

Both times, a direct request for quick feedback and, both times, you guys blew us away.  The first time I asked, your emails came in like a deluge — so thick and so fast that Jill (who sees all the emails first) suddenly said, “What is going ON?!?” (I’d written that post in a burst of last-minute inspiration and totally forgot to tell her to expect your emails.  Oooops!).

The SpaceCadet's Mini-Skein Club

And the second time I asked, you guys replied with literally hundreds of comments within a couple of hours.  It was amazing to watch!  And I know it’s given Mel a ton of wonderful information that she can use to help you overcome your hurdles to swatching.

So the valuable lesson?  For as much as it might feel like the most important thing in running a hand-dyeing business is the dyeing… the truth is that the real most important thing is a great Community.  And that’s so more than just having people who buy yarn.  That’s having wonderful people who come together o make a KAL supportive and fun; it’s what makes a yarn show great because I finally get to meet so many customers in person; it’s the supportive and helpful posts on Ravelry whenever anyone has a question or needs assistance.  A great community is truly an amazing thing.

And there was a second lesson too.  When I have a question, I should…  just ask you.

So Here’s a Question…

I have a little dilemma.  You see that gradient kit below?  The one that morphs from that fabulous yellow into gray into lavender?  Yeah, I’m totally in love with it, but I can’t for the life of me think of a name for it.  There’s two of those kits sitting in the shop right now with no name (seriously!).  People will think I’ve gone mad.

Unamed SpaceCadet Gradient Kit

So here’s my question: what would you call that gradient colourway?  Leave your answers in the comments (or just hit ‘reply’ if you’re reading this by email).  I’m totally stuck and I’d really appreciate your ideas!

Limited Edition Colourways

You guys already know that the Mini-Skeins are my opportunity to really explore colour and experiment with new ideas.  See those Mini-Skein bundles up at the top?  They were the Multicolour Mix for October, November, and December — and there were three colourways in there that I just knew I wanted to dye again.
