Busy-ness and Brain Freeze

Things are crazy-busy here at the moment!  I am dyeing like mad for the first show of the season, the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet festival on Feb 10-11-12.  Our booth position had to be changed only two days ago (we’re now booth #43, please come find us!), which prompted a redesign of our entire layout at the last minute.  The mini-skeins for February will have to go out the same weekend, so we’re busy getting those all ready too.  The InterStellar Yarn Alliance parcels will go out only two weeks later, so the yarn for them needs to be dyed and the goodies finished up too.  Oh, and my last shipment of yarn to dye for the festival was delayed, so it will arrive on Thursday — and then I’ll try to get 25lbs of yarn all dyed and dried and ready to go in less than a week.

The crazy-busies?  Yeah, I haz ’em!

I was supposed to write a blog post on Monday, but when I sat down at my computer…  my brain froze, froze right up solid.  I tried again last night and, again… nothing.  Too much to do, and not enough brain cells left.  So, instead, I went back to boxing up the orders that had to go out today.

And as I was wrapping up the yarns and placing them in each box, I realised I was smiling.   Because as much as I love dyeing — and, oh I do loooove dyeing — that’s only half of the picture.  As lovely as the yarns are when they come out of the dyepots, it’s not until someone takes them home and knits them up into something beautiful that they’ve lived up to their potential.

I love sending my yarns out to my customers.  And, as crazy as show-prep is, I love doing yarn festivals.  So many yarns, going home with so many happy customers, ready to be made into so many wonderful new projects…  And I get to sit and talk about them with every one of you.

Seriously, I think I have the best job in the world!  Thanks to you guys, choosing SpaceCadet yarns and making all this possible.  And really, what could be better to blog about than that?

Come to the Rav Meet-Up at Pgh Knit & Crochet!

One thing I really really really ought to learn is that after Christmas comes January.  Christmas is not the end.  Christmas is not a wall.  Christmas is just a point in time and then…  January comes.

And if something important is happening in early in the new year, you really have to be able to see past Christmas to get ready for it.  I really need to learn this because I do it every year!

Please tell me you do too.  Tell me I’m not the only one who has trouble seeing past Christmas…  please?

Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Feb 10-11-12

The Pittsburgh Knit & Crochet Festival is coming up on Feb 10, 11, 12.  It’s a fabulous event — the entire (enormous) ballroom of the Four Points Sheraton in Mars PA* is turned into a dreamscape of fibery goodness.  And I am soooooo looking forward to it!

There are wonderful classes, a fabulous market, and some incredible cool events.  But more important than that — and by far the coolest thing about doing a festival like this — is that I get to meet so many SpaceCadet customers!  I love it when people come up and introduce themselves, show off their wonderful SpaceCadet projects,  and I can finally put faces to names.  It is such a treat, getting to meet so many people who are almost already old friends.  How often in life do you get to do that?!?

So if you live anywhere in the Western Pennsylvania area, please come!  And please wear your SpaceCadet project.  I may have seen the pictures, but I would love to see it — and you — in person!  Here’s the info again:

The Ravelry Meet-Up

And if you are coming on the Friday (Feb 10), please do come to the Ravelry Meet-Up!  It’s being organised by my friend Natalie, my sister-who-now-knits-a-bit, and me, and I know there’s going to be some pretty cool fiberistas attending: I can’t wait to meet up with a bunch of fiberista friends: the lovely Karrie of the KnitPurlGurl video podcast; Stacey Trock of Fresh Stitches; Cosy Cornelius-Bates and Gwen Erin with whom** I did Pittsburgh Indie Knit & Spin

Please come! We’d love to have you there! Here are the details for the Meet-Up:

Ravelry Meet-Up
Friday, Feb 10 at 6.30pm
in the Cranberry Room (located off the main atrium via the hallway to the left of Legends pub)

It’s by RSVP only and today is the LAST DAY to reserve your space, so please go and send me a Ravelry PM (private message) right now!

So there you go — the Pittsburgh Knit and Crochet Festival is only about three weeks away.  And I am so excited about it!

But am I ready for it?  No.  Did it sneak up on me after Christmas?  Yep, yep it did.  Am I presently dyeing like a woman possessed?  Ohhhhh yes!

Because I really, really, really need to learn that after Christmas comes…  January.

*Did you spot that?  It’s in Mars! Mars!  Makes a SpaceCadet feel right at home, that does.

**My high-school English teacher would be so proud.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? And, right in time for some early holiday shopping.

What?!? Holiday Shopping?!?

No, I know.  I know.  But seriously, I saw it on Twitter the other day —  there are less than 60 days until Christmas (ohhhhh, I am soooo woefully unprepared!).  But if you’ve got knitters and crocheters on your shopping list and you want to get them something wonderfully one-of-a-kind, this show is the place to be.

And, y’know, even if you don’t have any other knitters or crocheters on your list…  we-e-ell, we both know that you love one-of-a-kind yarn (that’s why you’re reading this, right?), so come on… come see us.  You’ll have a great time!

And if you want to know more about the fiber artists that are going to be there, check out the Indie Knit & Spin website, where you’ll find interviews and profiles of each one.  Here’s the one about me!

Most of the time, as a dyer, I’m working in isolation.  I go into the studio, create my colours, and then post them off to customers near and far, all over the country.  It’s a rare opportunity to get to meet my customers, and even more special when I get to meet my local customers.  So please, mark Nov 19 on your calendar and come to the Pittsburgh Indie Knit & Spin.  I’d love to see you!

Two Rhinebeck Discoveries and a Shop Update

Last weekend was Rhinebeck, otherwise known as the New York Sheep and Wool Festival and one of the best and most exciting fiber festivals in the country.  Or…  so I’d been told.  I’d never been to it before, but this year the stars aligned and I got my chance!

The Ravelry Meet-up at Rhinebeck Sheep & Wool Festival

Rhinebeck was everything I hoped for.  Sheep, alpaca, llamas, kangaroos (seriously!), fair food, fine food, wine, spinning wheels, spindles, fiber, and yarn yarn yarnyarnyarn.  At the Ravelry meet-up (above), I got the chance to meet Laura Nelkin, a designer I’ve featured here before and whose work I’ve admired a long time.  I also ran into the delightful Ariane of Falling Stitches, my friend Julia of Knitterly Things, my friend Gwen of GwenErin Natural Fibers, and Ravelry’s own Mary-Heather and Sarah (wearing a fast-asleep Carlton).

But never mind all that, because I discovered two people whose products I loved so much that I really thought you’d want to meet them!

.
First is Melissa Tompkins-Stahl, whom I liked right from the moment I met her but — more importantly for you — who also makes absolutely lovely ceramic buttons.   Seriously, they are like candy for knitters.  My friend Kristen introduced us and pointed out how beautifully the colours of Melissa’s buttons and colours of SpaceCadet yarns go together.  Kristen put several buttons against a cowl she’d spun with SpaceCadet fiber and she was right.  Melissa and I clearly share a colour connection, and if you’re ever looking for buttons for a project you’ve made with SpaceCadet yarn, it’s worth looking at her website

.

And the other person is Leah LaFera of Ulster Soaps.  I knew I needed to check out Leah’s stall even before I saw it — the smell of her soaps was tugging at me!  And when I got there and met Leah, I knew I wanted to tell you about her.  I’ve always wanted to try soapmaking (don’t you?), so I asked her a whole bunch of questions, and she answered them all so enthusiastically.  It’s clear she loves what she does!  I chose some soaps: Peppermint Delight, Lavender Dream, and Lemon Poppy Seed (nom nom nom!) and I knew I wanted to share them (and her!) with you too.

And of course, there was all that yarn — so much fun to look at it, to smoosh it, to pet it!  And it inspired me to do a shop update…

This Weekend: PLY Party (and Emptying the Shop)

It’s going to be an exciting weekend!  We’re packing up all the yarns and heading to Baltimore for Lovelyarn‘s PLY (Peace, Love, Yarn) Party on Sunday, and — so long as the rain holds off — I think it’s going to be a blast!

knitting, yarn, crochet, lovelyarns, PLY party, spacecadet, space cadet, indie dyer, hand-dyed

The PLY Party is a gathering of the indie dyers that Lovelyarns carries in their shop, selling their yarns in person and getting to meet the customers (and that last bit is the part I’m really looking forward to).  If you’re anywhere in the Baltimore area this weekend, please do come to the party!

Here’s all the details:

Lovelyarn’s PLY (Peace, Love, Yarn) Party

Sunday, September 11th  from  12noon – 6:00pm
The party starts inside Lovelyarns at
846 W. 36th St.
Baltimore, MD 21211

with a beautiful array of complimentary food, drink (and cupcakes!)

Then go through the shop to enter the
THREE TENTS in the backyard parking pad.
And for even more incentive, five door prize bags
full of goodies will be given away!

—————————————————————————————————-

Now, because we’ll be taking most of our stock to the PLY Party, I will be emptying the Etsy shop for the weekend.  I’ll probably do that on Saturday night and hope to get it opened up again early next week (Subscriptions to the InterStellar Yarn Alliance will of course remain available over the weekend).

And this is the first time I’ve ever done the PLY party, but I’m told it’s really popular and gets a bit crazy.  …So if there’s anything in the shop that’s been calling your name, you might want to grab it now, because there’s no telling if we’ll still have it next week!

Hope to see you at the PLY Party!

September Events You Don’t Want to Miss!

I looked at the calendar today and realised that September follows August… I don’t know that happened, but apparently, that means September is next month!  And that’s great because there’s a lot of super fun stuff happening in September…

PLY Party in Baltimore

knitting, yarn, crochet, lovelyarns, PLY party, spacecadet, space cadet, indie dyer, hand-dyed

First, we’re going to the PLY Party at Lovelyarns in Baltimore on Sept 11th.  Lovelyarns is a cool little LYS in Hampden that began carrying SpaceCadet Creations yarns over the summer and we’re delighted that they invited us to be part of the Peace Love Yarn (PLY) party, their yearly gathering of indie hand-dyers and spinners.  And they just posted a really cool little SpaceCadet bio on the PLY website.
If you’re in the Baltimore area, please do come out and join us! We’d love to meet you.
